The traditional water basin of Poretsou Monastery is a living part of the local folk heritage and traditional water management. It is located a few meters from the monastery complex, next to the Erymanthos River, and was used for decades for the natural washing of textiles, blankets, fleeces and heavy clothes, utilizing exclusively the power of running water.
Today, the water basin is once again operational and open to all. Any visitor can use it with a free contribution, continuing a practice that for centuries was part of the daily life of the mountain communities of the area. The experience of using the water basin is not only practical, but also experiential: a contact with traditional techniques, the power of nature and the simplest way of life.
The restoration of the water basin was implemented in 2025 by the Cultural Association of Agrambela "Agios Dimitrios", in collaboration with the NGO Another Way and with funding from the Helidoni Foundation, within the framework of the 7th cycle of the Bodossaki Foundation's Points of Support program .
Part of the work was carried out within the framework of an open experiential and educational workshop with the participation of organizations, craftsmen, volunteers and people interested in the preservation of traditional building techniques. The aim of the workshop was to recover knowledge about the construction and operation of the water basin, as well as to preserve the traditional practice of cleaning weavers through water management. The workshop was co-organized by the NGO Another Way, the NGO Boulouki and the Region of Western Greece in collaboration with the Technical Chamber of Greece, Department of Western Greece and with the support of the Municipality of Kalavryta.
